The Secret To Happiness
By Susanne on Jan 22, 2010 in Dating Advice
Everything that we do, we do because we want greater happiness and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to feel happy?
The media captilise on this every day. They convince you that you will be more successful, more attractive and more wealthy if you buy their product. You buy into the belief that when you become more successful, attractive and wealthy you will feel happier and so you buy their product. The reality however is quite different.
I’m sure you’ve been there and done it – I certainly have: You’ve bought that expensive designer outfit or sunglass or your favorite car and it made you happy – for awhile anyway. But when that wore off, you then had to go and find the next thing that would make you feel happy. People can spend the whole of their lives chasing happiness this way – and still feel miserable. We’ve all been sucked into the myth that ‘things’ buy happiness and deep down inside we know it doesn’t really work. So what is the real secret to happiness?
Mahatma Ghandi defined happiness this way:
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
This is an interesting definition of happiness because for me this is also how I define authenticy or being ‘real’. My definition of authenticiy is about being who you truly are. It’s about ’walking your talk’. It’s when what you think, say and do – when mind, heart and gut – are all aligned.
So happiness is about living an authentic life – not about things. When you are living a life of authenticity you are happy. And when you are happy you are then you are actually more able to enjoy those nice things in life. They add to your happiness rather than create it.
David Riklin from Self-Growth.com takes this one step further when he talks about Empowerment.
“Empowerment means living an authentic life – your life – a life that energizes you”
David asks,
“Are you living an authentic life? In other words, are you living a life that makes you feel fulfilled and energized? If the answer is no, then you are not truly empowered”
There you have it: Happiness comes by being empowered to live an authentic life!
In this video, David Riklan discusses a 3-step method some people have used to boost their sense of empowerment, as recommended by Valery Satterwhite, the SelfGrowth.com Official Guide to Empowerment.
